Course Description

This is a module that combines 3 basic knowledge and skills a carer must know.

A.) Emergency Preparedness is about readiness to attend to emergencies. This module teaches the student to recognize and identify emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. It teaches the skills to be able to provide immediate care for a suddenly ill or injured person until more advanced medical care arrives to take over. This module will also review the principles, procedures of Basic Life Support (BLS) and teaches how to perform BLS. The student will also learn about common specific medical emergencies like choking, fall, seizures and fainting and loss of consciousness. Regarding  fires, the student will learn about the different types of fires and which type of fire extinguisher should be used to extinguish them. With falls or entrapment emergencies, the student will learn actual rope skills for patient transport.  The student will also review health and safety issues related to chemicals and other hazards.

B.) Safe Physical Environment raises the student's awareness on risks and dangers related to work, help identify risks and hazards in the workplace and describe the steps involved in risk assessment to eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in the environment in order to prevent injuries. The modules teaches about falls, which are often the result of interactions between predisposing, person-specific risk factors and identified hazards in the physical environment like a stair or a dim light that are potential risk issues. The student learns how to manage these factors in order to prevent falls and other incidents.

C.) Infection Control prepares the student to help prevent and control the spread of infection by understanding the the evidence-based knowledge of the chain of infection, the common causes and symptoms, the universal precautions and transmission-based precautions, and how to practice controls.
