Course Description

Elderly persons with dementia are infrequently referred to palliative care services unlike in cancer, and end-of-life issues are likely to be provided by dementia carers. In this module, the student learns the role of palliative care and his/her role in end-of-life issues in dementia. In as much as end-of-life care is not universal, this module will raise awareness and understanding on advance directives, 'Do Not Resuscitate' orders and different policies in hospitals and long-stay residential regarding palliative care with regards to nutritional support, including artificial (tube) feeding, and pain management. This module will teach the student how to assess pain using pain scales in dementia in order to guide the medical team on the use of pain medications, with the goal to promote comfort and enhance the quality of life of the the person with dementia.
